Heart of Yorkshire

[<<] [>>] by Fiona Crompton at York
22nd June 2023 (AC - Handicap)

On 10th and 11th June a dozen players from quite a variety of clubs gathered at the York lawns to play in the Heart of Yorkshire tournament. The weather dawned dry and hot, by the end of the tournament we were all wishing that there was a thermostat that could be turned down several degrees. Consequently the lawns were very fast which was quite a challenge at times. Getting the balls to put the brakes on was an art in itself. By the end of day 1 it was clear that Wendy Robertson of York CC and Julian Gibson of Middlesbrough CC were the leading contenders. On day 2 by pure fluke they were drawn to play each other in the final game. Wendy was ahead on points but Julian could draw level if he pegged out. The result would then be decided on hoops run. Early on Wendy scored a lot of hoops but Julian overtook her to peg out. On the count back Wendy had scored enough hoops to mean that Julian needed to have scored 20 hoops, in an 18 point game!! So Wendy was very deservingly the winner. In doing so she succeeded in triggering a reduction in her handicap too.

The whole weekend was a very enjoyable one , and we look forward to welcoming as many participants as possible back next year.
