Middlesborough B-Level

[<<] [>>] by Dennis Scarr at Middlesborough
26th June 2023 (AC)

It was a glorious weekend for the Middlesbrough B Level Tournament.

With 6 entrants we had a all play all format over two days.

Many thanks to those who chose to support our Tournament given the lawns were far from their best after a prolonged period of lack of maintenance and abuse of lawns by youths who believed Croquet lawns would make excellent football pitches. Thankfully site security is now much improved and work is ongoing to bring our lawns back to a reasonable state.

Using only the best two of our four lawns quite generous time limits of 2 hours and forty five minutes were allowed, plus fifteen minutes for double banking. This was to take account of varying pace of parts of the lawns and central areas where the footballing footfall was most prevalent.

The majority of games were quite interactive with a third going to time.

As day two began we had three players on two wins. In the event of more than one player having most wins we would turn to head to head results and if necessary net hoops.

As round five drew to a conclusion Ian Hall and Dennis Scarr were both on four wins. As Ian had beaten Dennis in the first round he would be winner unless Mark Simmerson won his final game which would mean 'who beat who' would not produce a winner and the decision would go to net hoops. With ten minutes remaining Mark was trailing Terry Vernazza by one hoop and Ian had one hand on the trophy. However a late rally by Mark saw him win plus one on time and hand the trophy to Dennis Scarr who had the best net hoop score.

So the Winner was Dennis Scarr.
