Stuart Smith bt Trevor Billard 26-21
Margaret Crossland bt John Guy 26-14
Dean Morton bt Ian Dampney 26-2

Both teams arrived in Nottingham in drizzling rain as the green keeper was busy finishing off mowing the immaculate lawns ready for the day's play.

The morning doubles pairings were Stuart Smith (4.5) and Ian Gampney(7) against Trevor Billard (2.5) and Margaret Crossland (12) . Singles was John Guy (5) against Dean Morton (14).

It looked very much as though the doubles match would be over rather quickly as Ian took hoop 1 but then sent a ball off the lawn behind hoop 1 leaving a very easy start for Margaret, who then took her ball to 4 back on her first turn and rover on her second.

Broadwas were unable to make further progress before Trevor hit in taking his ball to peg, peeling Margaret's at rover. Unfortunately for Sheffield the rush to peg wasn't on so a run for safety was needed.

Stuart stepped up, made a brilliant hit in and proceeded to take his ball to peg leaving Ian to try to do the same which he nearly did. Sadly an error in playing for the wrong hoop and some bad luck stopped the comeback and Margaret managed to seal Sheffield's 26-23

On the other lawn the game was evenly matched finishing with a win for Broadwas 15 - 11 on time.

In the afternoon sunshine Margaret and Dean managed comfortable wins 26-14 and 26-3 respectively. The lovely, true lawns and fairly generous hoops certainly helped to raise our games.

On the other lawn Trevor and Stuart battled it out with impressive 12 hoop breaks for each of them. After a valiant comeback attempt by Trevor from 21 - 1 the match ended in a win for Stuart 26 - 21

The match finished with a 3-2 victory for Sheffield but it could so easily have been the reverse result.

Grateful thanks from both teams to Nottingham CC for their hospitality.
