Nailsea Croquet Club's August Weekend Handicap Tournament took place in the blistering heat. There were twenty competitors including four from Watford, one from High Wycombe and three from Shrewsbury together with other more local players. Competitors found the conditions testing and some complained that the hoops were too tight; on checking one was found to be 3/32 inch clearance instead of 1/8, others were found to be correctly set.
CHRIS DONOVAN (handicap 14, High Wycombe) won the event with 5 wins out of 5 and a final rating of 70. MARK HOMAN (8, Watford) took second place (5/6, final rating 65) and PAT LONG (8) and BERNARD WILSON (11) were equal third (both Nailsea, 3/4, 58). The following gained handicap reductions: CHRIS DONOVAN to 12, MARK HOMAN to 7 and BERNARD WILSON to 10.
Thanks to all those who helped to make the event a success, especially to MAUREEN MURPHY, who spent the whole weekend catering for the competitors, and unfortunately scalded herself at the end of the second day. We all wish her a speedy recovery.
