Bury versus Roehampton - Final

Played at Cheltenham 25/9/2026

Match Report

The two teams met at CqE Headquarters in Cheltenham for the final of the GC Inter-Club Bowl played in good weather on quick lawns.

Bury started by presenting each member of the opposition team with a traditional Black Pudding purchased in the World Famous Bury market earlier that week. A Pudding was also given to James Death for help on the day.

Roehampton started well with their top two, Kevin O'Connor(4) and Carmel Brance(6) winning their doubles match 7-6, 7-1 against Bernard Lord(4) and Duncan Meachin(5).

They then went further ahead with Janine Railton (6) beating David Artingstall (5) 7-4, 7-5.

Fortunately, after losing his first game, Simon Attwell(6) rallied to overcome Emile Fernades (6) 2-7, 7-4, 7-5 to get Bury's first point on the board after a marathon 3 hour struggle.

Lunch was taken with Roehampton leading 2-1 in matches and tied 1-1 in the top two singles between Captain Bernard Lord and Captain Kevin O'Connor and Duncan Meachin versus Carmel Branche.

After lunch Carmel completed her win over Duncan Meachin 7-1, 4-7, 7-5 to leave Roehampton only needing one point from the remaining three matches and Bury needing to win all three.

Bernard Lord then finished a 2-1 win over his opposite number 7-3, 2-7, 7-4 and Simon Attwell won his second singles match against Janine Railton 7-3, 7-5, despite putting her ball through the hoops three times in their match but finishing with a lovely six foot jump shot on hoop 12.

This then left Emile and David playing for the Cup in the last singles match with Emile coming out on top in the first game 7-6 and David winning the next 7-5. By now it was getting dark and we were treated to some high class clearances but not accurate hoop running. David eventually went 5-3 ahead but Emile pulled one back at hoop 9. David won hoop 10 to forge ahead 6-4. However Emile showed all his skill in his fight to win the next hoop and David only succeeded in winning his match after a 20 minute battle which could have gone either way.

So Bury won the Cup 4-3 against a very sporting and gracious team. Many thanks to Cheltenham for hosting the event and making their facilities freely available.
