Dave Mundy won the Southwick weekend
After a grey start the Saturday turned out much finer than the previous years "late" Advanced Tournament. 30 Players were on the lawns by 9:15am practising before the official start at 9:30am in preparation for new Tournament Regulations, due next season.
Interestingly in spite of the practice nearly half the players still managed to lose their games, the only exceptions being those with byes to the next round! As the day progressed the challenging conditions produced croquet that fell well short of the quality of the Catering. A couple of Triples were no match for the Turkey Escalopes and Spiced Vegetables. The variety of clanged hoops and mis-approaches did however eclipse the excellent choice of desserts available on both days. Top Seeds managed to progress through the early rounds but the lack of time limits saw several games in both the main event and the Swiss being pegged down in the gloom of Saturday evening (it goes without saying that your correspondent was playing in one of these). The good weather stayed with us throughout Sunday. The morning's semi finals saw the top seeds toppled as Dave Mundy and Tim Wilkins qualified to embark on a Best of Three after the excellent Steak Pie lunch on offer.
Dave, playing in his third final on Lawn 1 this year finally succeeded, thus keeping the weekend on schedule, with a +15, +4 win over Tim. The Egyptian was well clinched when Rutger Beijderwellen tripled out a +26 winner over Dave Kibble. Thanks go to Simon Tuke - Manager, Rose Jenner and Barbara Kitchen - Caterers and Sussex CCC for their efficiency, skill and warm welcome.
