Richard M Smith retains the Letchworth Advanced Weekend title

In only its second year, Letchworth Croquet Club's Advanced Weekend again attracted a strong field - eight players all with handicaps of scratch or below. As it had the previous year, the result hinged on the very last game, this time between Richard M Smith and Nigel Polhill. Unfortunately Nigel had been knocked out of the reckoning in his previous game against Christian Carter, but Richard needed to prevail in order to retain the title. And so he did, winning in style (+26) to edge Christian into second place.

Other highlights of the event included three triples (two by Christian), an OTP win for Nigel against David Tutt, a hen laying up in corner 2, and the invention of the Letchworth Dyno Lever shot (see www.bygravecroquetclub.org.uk/videos.html).

Thanks to the grounds team (under the leadership of George Woolhouse) for producing some top-notch lawns and rock-solid hoops, and to the tennis club caterers.

Podium places:

Richard M Smith (6 wins from 7)

Christian Carter (5 wins from 7)

Duncan Hector (4 wins from 6)

The also-rans:

Jonathan Hills (4/7)

Lionel Tibble (3/7)

Nigel Polhill (3/7)

Nick Mounfield (1/6)

David Tutt (0/5)
