Another new name - that of Wingrave's Rob Chatwin - will be engraved on the imposing Abnalls Trophy, after the 11th Edgbaston GC B Class Tournament, held on the 5th of September, was played out in weather ranging from monsoon to bright sun. One Block had played really quickly and the other, by comparison, had dawdled. Any slower, and the Final would have been aborted, since the lawns became lakes just as 12 Croquet friends were saying their Goodbyes.

The Final saw Rob display calm smooth play, with truly excellent distance control. Jane had reached a very steep peak in the earlier rounds and could not repeat her solid all round quality in the Final. 3rd and 4th Places went to Paul Durkin and John Cundell. To move further forward from their current good standard, most of the entrants need a little more bravery to take on the big shots, instead of executing a simpler clearance. Their play, on Edgbaston's beautifully presented lawns, indicates that they are all quite good enough to reap rewards from taking on lower percentage and riskier shots, with a greater potential for positive scoring.

Edgbaston is proud of its reputation for catering & hospitality and a completely new team of volunteers took up the challenge this year. The plaudits and congratulations from all competitors suggests that they will be encouraged to volunteer again, in 2018. Well done and thanks.

It was a lovely Tournament to manage, thanks to the friendly and sporting attitude of every single player - returner or newcomer. We are all lucky to have our Sport and its People.
