Keith Toovey wins GC B-level at Wrest Park

On 19th May, a field of 16 players from 12 different clubs took part in this tournament. It was played in bright sunny conditions but with a nagging threat of heavy showers always present.

The field was split into 4 blocks of 4 players on an all play all basis. Julie Tremble (Guildford) and Charles Sale (Ealing) were comfortable winners of their blocks with a perfect record. Runners up to them were Tony Elliott (Ealing) and Marilyn Robinson (Northampton).

In the other blocks, Keith Toovey (High Wycombe), Judith Pengelly (Leighton- Linslade), Glynis Davies (Northampton) and Jane Powell (Ealing) all progressed to the Knockout with 2 wins each.

Surprises were in store at the Quarter Final stage. Judith beat Julie (7-5) and Glynis beat Charles (7-6). Keith beat Tony (7-4) and Jane beat Marilyn (7-5). In the Semi-Finals, Keith sustained his best form to beat Glynis (7-5) and Jane had a good battle against Judith before gaining the upper hand (7-5).

Few would have predicted a Final between Keith and Jane, but both demonstrated their prowess at positional play before Keith gained a deserved victory (7-5). Jane had the compensation of a handicap reduction from (5) to (4) at the end of play. Judith beat Glynis (7-3) to settle 3rd and 4th places.

The predicted build up of ominously dark clouds took place as the Final was completed. A quick presentation followed but the clouds slid by to enable unfinished games to be completed, including the Final of the Plate, to leave Rick Lilley (Phyllis Court) the winner against John Gosden (Guildford).

Finishing Order: 1. Keith Toovey 2. Jane Powell 3. Judith Pengelly 4. Glynis Davies
