Peter Rothwell won the Wrest Park AC Handicap Tournament

As in May, the tournament consisted of six players: four Wrest Park members plus Andre Machell from Watford and Michael Bithell from Meldreth. George Collin took Sunday off to make up the team for the EACF AC Leagues play-off at Peterborough, so Geoff Strutt found himself playing as well as managing. Games were played as full bisque base 4 with 3½ hour time limits.

Peter Rothwell and Tim Nurse were playing in their first tournament. They joined the club this year and had been receiving coaching from club secretary Tim Brewer. The results of this soon became apparent:

Peter Rothwell (12) beat George Collin +26, Andre Machell +26, David Marsh +26, Tim Nurse +9, Michael Bithell +6

David Marsh (-1½) beat Michael Bithell +8; George Collin +8; Geoff Strutt +18, Andre Machell +19

Tim Nurse (14) beat Andre Machell +26, David Marsh +26, Geoff Strutt +18

Michael Bithell (6) beat George Collin +26, Tim Nurse +5, Andre Machell +20

George Collin (-½) beat Andre Machell +15

By the end of play on Saturday Peter and Tim had five +26 wins between them and they played each other in the crunch game on Sunday morning, Peter winning +9. Peter then beat Michael Bithell +6 to complete a clean sweep and take the trophy. David Marsh had four wins, having played an extra game against George Collin on Saturday, followed by Tim and Michael with three wins apiece.
